Te Whau Vineyard, Waiheke Island, Hauraki Gulf, near Auckland, New Zealand

In New Zealand there are at least ten wine regions, over 500 companies and different varieties of red wine grapes. on the Northern island the weather is milder, produces Cabernet, Souvignon and Merlot. in Central Otago where the temperature lower they produce the Pinot Noir. In a fast speed changing landscape we have visited some areas of excellent red wines as the island of Waiheke Island near Auckland a large 93 sq km island which is the green jewel in the volcanic Gulf of Huraki. Here fabulous mansions of wealthier kiwi merge with a picturesque rural atmosphere where no one is in a hurry. The landscape encourages virtue of patience. After crossing it for a few days you realize that inside you have started to slow down. A stop in Oneroa is a must with its many cafe and galleries with touches that remember the Cote d’Azur.

Our advice for Waiheke Island.

Te Whau: vineyard and restaurant among the most ‘popular in the region Rangihoua Olives Estate: tour and tasting of fine extra virgin olive oils Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant: romantic dinners and two villas for rent straight on the ocean.

Mopving on the Southern island we reach the Central Otago wine region, home of the best Pinot Noir in the country. A region landlocked, sparsely populated, dominated by the peaks of snowing tops of Cairnmur, Pisa Range and Horn, with two cities Queenstown and Wanaka, on the shores of beautiful alpine lakes there are breathtaking golf pitchs as that of Kelvin Heights Here in a more severe atmosphere made of icy winters and dry, hot summers the grapes ripen slowly producing great Pinot Noir in color and taste, and full of nuances. Among the best vineyards we can quote: Van Asch and Rippon valleys on Wanaka lake and Pisa Range Estate which produces and expresses a so fragrant bouquet with a hint of rock river and cherries.
